witch hunt (film: Wicker – Alex Huston Fischer & Eleanor Wilcon, 2026)

‘Wicker‘ is one of the most original and surprising films I have seen lately. The screenwriters and directors are a husband-and-wife filmmaking duo, Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, who have only a few films to their credit—either individually or together. They adapted a short story by Ursula Wills, a little-known British author, and intentionally set the narrative in an indeterminate time and place. From the story’s 14 pages, they have crafted a world dominated by superstitions that have evolved into traditions, and ancestral beliefs that have become established customs—complete with social rules and family dynamics rooted in the distant past. Love has little place in this world; only the intervention of magic can bring it back into people’s lives. And if everything that defies explanation is considered magic, then anyone who loves is an ‘Outsider’— and outsiders are not easily welcomed into a world so completely closed off within itself.

The film resembles a period drama, yet it is much more than that. It is set somewhere along the English coast—sometime between the Middle Ages and the mid-19th century—within a rural community where people do not address one another by name, but rather by their profession or their specific role in village life: the Baker and the Baker’s Wife, the Tailor and the Tailor’s Wife, the Butcher and the Butcher’s Wife, the Innkeeper and the Innkeeper’s Wife, the Doctor and the Doctor’s Daughters, and so on. On the fringes of the village and its community live the Wicker Weaver Basketmaker — marked from birth by his diminutive stature — and the Fisherwoman, a woman well past her youth who remains alone and unmarried, perhaps partly due to the distinct odor associated with her trade. Although women work far harder—often while the men spend long hours at the pub —life is dominated by the men. The most fitting symbol of this is the collar placed around a woman’s neck at her wedding. The Fisherwoman alone rejects this collar and any conventional relationship, yet she, too, is haunted by solitude. In desperation, she asks the Basketmaker to craft a husband for her out of willow branches. The craftsman pours all his skill—and a bit of his own soul—into his work. The result exceeds all expectations. The Wicker Husband not only brings fulfillment to the Fisherwoman’s life but also shakes the very foundations of the village’s social order, altering the destinies of the men—and, above all, the women.

‘Wicker’ is a beautiful love story, as well as a social and moral parable of a freshness and originality rarely seen of late. The two writer-directors succeed in translating this into the language of cinema, deftly navigating formal challenges that could easily have steered the plot toward the tedious or the ridiculous. That is not the case; on the contrary, what unfolds on screen is a story that flows seamlessly—thanks in no small part to a blend of erotic boldness and humor, a hallmark of English literature dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. If certain themes resonate with striking contemporary relevance—such as the commentary on social networks (akin to the old concept of “the town grapevine”) or the rejection of the “outsider”—it is because these human flaws are inherited, not newly discovered in the 20th or 21st centuries. Everything feels natural, engaging, and highly entertaining. Olivia Colman adds another wonderful performance to her filmography; I believe she stands a strong chance of earning an Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress. Alexander Skarsgård shows the courage to conceal his physique behind a mask and costume—reminiscent of Jean Marais in ‘La Belle et la Bête‘. Peter Dinklage, a star of the small screen, shines in a role that defies his stature on the big screen. The entire cast is expertly directed. Special mention must go to the set designers, as the film was shot almost exclusively in studios in Hungary. Among the cinematic offerings during this pre-awards season, ‘Wicker‘ stands out as something different — in the best possible way.

CHANGE.WORLD: Premianții anului 2026

(sursa imaginii: www.rs.kagu.tus.ac.jp/soai/profile-e.html)

‘Hôtel du Nord‘ (1938) is the middle film in a trilogy created by Marcel Carné during the late 1930s and early 1940s—a trilogy that established him as the master of the ‘poetic realism’ genre. As in the other two films of the trilogy, the story centers on characters from the fringes of society—men and women who have had little luck in life and who seek solace in impossible romantic entanglements. It is the only film in the trilogy that does not feature Jean Gabin, and the only one for which the screenplay and dialogue were not written by Jacques Prévert. This latter absence is somewhat palpable; the adaptation of Eugène Dabit’s novel suffers from verbosity and theatrical pathos—even though the dialogues were penned by Henri Jeanson, a prolific and highly regarded screenwriter of the era. Nevertheless, in terms of cinematic aesthetics and emotional resonance, ‘Hôtel du Nord‘ approaches the caliber of the other two films in the trilogy.

The Hôtel du Nord is located on the outskirts of Paris, along the banks of the Canal Saint-Denis, which is spanned by picturesque bridges. The restaurant is almost always filled with regulars from the working-class neighborhood or the occasional visitors, while the hotel’s few rooms house a diverse cast of characters and activities that skirt the edge of the law. Among the permanent residents are Monsieur Edmond—a man who is simultaneously menacing and charismatic—and his mistress, Raymonde. One night, the hotel becomes the setting for a dramatic event. A young couple—Renée and Pierre—rent a room here with the intention of committing suicide together, driven to despair by their inability to cope with life’s obstacles. Their plan fails, and the young man is charged with attempted murder. Is there any hope left for the couple? How will those around them react to this tragedy?

Comparing this film to the work produced more than 20 years later by the filmmakers of the Nouvelle Vague leads to some surprising conclusions. Marcel Carné was a master of the very production style that these young rebels would later criticize, despise, and strive to replace. Although the Hôtel du Nord actually existed and looked exactly as it appears in the film, the shooting did not take place on location; instead, it was filmed in a studio, where the setting was meticulously reconstructed at a significant production cost. The script is theatrical, and the actors were directed to adhere to it strictly—the complete opposite of the improvisational freedom granted to actors in Nouvelle Vague films. Yet, even within their critiques, these later filmmakers could not help but appreciate the quality—and even the authenticity—of the visuals. Filming in a studio allowed for a masterful use of light and shadow, imbued with an expressiveness and drama reminiscent of the finest works of German Expressionism. At many points, the camera displays a mobility within the expansive studio space that anticipates the techniques the Nouvelle Vague directors would later employ while filming on the streets. The element that brings this film closest to the works of its successors is the wide array of human archetypes—the naturalness and vivid, colorful quality of the supporting characters within whose world the onscreen drama unfolds. It is one of those films where the backdrop and the atmosphere (a key term for this picture) are more compelling than the story itself. Louis Jouvet crafts a character who seems to be a precursor to the gangsters or corrupt cops found in the American and French films noirs of subsequent decades—one wonders, did Humphrey Bogart ever see this film? Playing opposite him is Arletty, in a role even more intriguing than the classic “prostitute with a heart of gold” archetype. Paradoxically, the main characters feel somewhat less vivid—though Annabella was a major star at the time, and watching her, one can easily see why. ‘Hôtel du Nord‘ remains a film of interest even today, and not just for those passionate about the history of cinema.

3 days, 3 one-shots, 1 telenovela (film: 3 zile în Septembrie – Tudor Giurgiu, 2026)

I am fascinated by films that employ the ‘one-shot’ technique. A select few—very few—of them are, in my opinion, masterpieces. These are films that combine technical expertise, flawless coordination, complex logistics, and actor dedication with a story where the technical approach is not merely a display of virtuosity, but the very best way to bring the narrative to life for the audience. Tudor Giurgiu’s ‘3 Days in September‘ is not quite such a masterpiece, yet the plot is effectively showcased and amplified by the ‘one-shot’ technique. Had this method not been used, ‘3 Days in September‘ would have been nothing more than just another soap opera. Nothing more, nothing less. The term is not necessarily pejorative.

The “three days in September” refer to the day before, the day of, and the day after Bianca’s wedding. However, the wedding does not go according to plan. Bianca is forty years old; for her, this wedding represents perhaps the last chance to start a “normative” family and possibly have a child. The appearance of a rival on the wedding day ruins the celebration, and Bianca flees—driven by anger and despair, searching for meaning in the events unfolding around her.

September on the Black Sea coast is a classic setting in Romanian cinema. The tourist season has ended, the weather wavers between the lingering warmth of summer and the chill of the colder seasons, and the atmosphere lends itself to introspection and melancholy. Here, the setting is utilized beautifully, efficiently, and movingly. The one-shot technique works perfectly because it allows—especially during the Saturday segment, the day of the wedding—for an immersion into the protagonist’s psyche, a dramatic confrontation with the collapse of her world, and a search for support among the people she encounters on that fateful night. It is hard to find the right words to express my appreciation for the fantastic performance of Andreea Vasile; she is on screen 95% of the time and embodies her character’s drama with great intensity. The technical team—handling cinematography, sound, and logistics under Tudor Giurgiu’s direction—is remarkable. All of these transform what might otherwise have been a film I would have skipped, or dismissed as a mediocre melodrama, into a memorable artistic achievement.

a shard of a broken mirror (film: Naza – Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, 2026)

“Naza,” the documentary by Israelis Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, is one of those films that many people have an opinion about, yet very few have actually seen. I finally managed to watch it, and now I can share my thoughts. It is undoubtedly a courageous film within the Israeli context—one that does not shy away from sparking controversy. It aims to raise questions, though I do not believe they are directed where they ought to be. Instead, I find the film suffers from significant issues regarding credibility, journalistic ethics, the timing and method of its release, and—above all—a lack of depth in analyzing and presenting the context of the events depicted.

Of the roughly 80-minute runtime, only two or three minutes at the beginning mention the events that triggered the war in Gaza. The massacre planned and carried out by Hamas terrorists—including the murders, rapes, torture, and the abduction of hostages from the Israeli civilian population—are briefly noted only to be completely forgotten thereafter. The word “terrorist” is, I believe, never mentioned at all. What follows is a series of interviews with 24 unidentified individuals claiming to be military or specialists working with the Israeli military, yet their ranks or roles are never stated. These interviews—artistically filmed on rooftops in downtown Tel Aviv—reportedly took place between 2023 and 2025. Only a single scene shows a few seconds of an air-raid siren, representing just one instance among the thousands of rocket attacks launched by Hamas and its allies during this period. There is only a single passing mention of the fact that hundreds of civilian hostages abducted by Hamas remained held in the terrorists’ underground tunels. A few sequences show scattered clips from speeches by Netanyahu or excerpts from Israeli Channel 12 news (apparently the filmmakers’ preferred news outlet), yet no commentator—masked or otherwise—is called upon to explain the objectives of the Israeli army’s actions. The right of reply does not seem to be part of the filmmakers’ journalistic toolkit.

The testimonies given by the masked, anonymous interviewees fall into three categories: the calculation of collateral damage based on AI-driven algorithms (the very existence of such decision-making criteria would actually serve as an argument against accusations of genocide); firing upon civilians who strayed from designated corridors while trying to access food aid (a claim that struck me as highly implausible, given that it was the terrorists themselves who employed such tactics); and propaganda methods used to discredit individuals who provided information to foreign organizations (a very vague claim that appears only towards the end). Almost none of the accusations leveled in the film struck me as credible. The intelligence experts featured in the film use simplistic language, and if they are indeed real individuals, their level of responsibility was likely minimal. It is unclear what motivates them to speak with a journalist for a film funded by a foreign newspaper, as none of those interviewed—perhaps with a single exception—seem to harbor doubts or act out of ideological conviction. And if, as soldiers, they received orders contrary to the army’s ethical standards, why did they not approach their superiors or the Israeli press?

I hope the film is screened in Israel as well, allowing Israeli viewers to form their own opinions. I do not wish to join the chorus of condemnation directed at the filmmakers. I believe that criticism is welcome when well-founded and substantiated—even in wartime, and while respecting the protocols that ensure the safety of combatants—yet, frankly, I do not understand their intentions. For whom did they make this film? If it is intended for an Israeli audience, why wasn’t it released in Israel first? There are at least four television channels, along with numerous online outlets, that publish reports critical of government policy and military effectiveness. Why premiere in Venice and the global stage first—was it merely for awards and that twenty-four-minute standing ovation? The failure to grant a right of reply strikes me as a serious issue. The film includes no alternative viewpoint, nor any reaction from the army regarding the events depicted. Were responses requested but not received? However, the most significant objection, in my view, concerns the target of the criticism. The Israeli army, with its hundreds of thousands of troops and its experts, is not primarily responsible for the mistakes made before, on, and after October 7, 2023. Questions and criticisms must be directed first and foremost at the top political echelons. Finally, ‘Naza‘ fails to present the context—both historical and current. I doubt that the Venice jury and the majority of viewers around the world who have seen or will see the film understood or will understand what is shown on screen without that context. Israel is engaged in a war fought not only on the ground with weapons and ammunition but also on the propaganda front with images and words. The risk of providing arguments to the enemy in the propaganda war is equivalent to the risk of supplying them with weapons and ammunition. The creators likely sought to hold up a mirror to reality for Israeli and international audiences. The reality of the Gaza conflict is far more complex. A shard from a broken mirror can reflect only a distorted and incomplete image.

CHANGE.WORLD: Inteligența Artificială (IA) – Vocea unui optimist autorizat

Revista The Economist i-a dedicat o copertă cu titlul ‘Vrăjitorul siliciului’.

clash of cultures (film: Fjord – Cristian Mungiu, 2026)

Cristian Mungiu does not shy away from bringing complex and controversial phenomena and events to the screen. He did so in ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days‘—the film that launched his international career and earned him his first Palme d’Or—which revisited the dictatorship era and highlighted the Romanian communist regime’s criminal policy of boosting the birth rate at any cost. He followed this with ‘Beyond the Hills ‘and then ‘Graduation‘, films rooted in recent Romanian reality that mirror a society undergoing rapid change. ‘Fjord‘ draws inspiration from true events, a highly publicized case that occurred a decade ago. In this respect, it resembles ‘Beyond the Hills‘; like that film, it sheds light on little-known aspects of the conflicts between traditional life and religious beliefs—whether enduring or resurgent—in Romania and beyond. I have not seen the other films that competed at Cannes this year, but the second Palme d’Or awarded to Mungiu appears to recognize a film that confirms the director’s technical mastery, his courage in tackling difficult issues, and his ability to translate them into cinematic language. While in his previous films it was evident—or at least easy—to distinguish good from evil, ‘Fjord‘ offers no moral victors or screenwriter’s favorites in a dispute situated at the uncomfortable intersection of cultures and traditions in our supposedly globalized world. Screenwriter and director Mungiu offers the facts, and the audience is invited—if they wish—to pass judgment.

The film’s plot is inspired by a real-life case from about a decade ago—a case that received extensive media coverage and sparked heated debate on social media. This aspect, however, is less apparent in Mungiu’s dramatization, which focuses on the arrival of the family—named Gheorghiu in the film—in a small community situated along a remote, picturesque Norwegian fjord. The pressure of the natural environment—spectacular and cold, constantly reminding the few inhabitants of its power and the dangers posed by avalanches—looms in the background. Even here, the perception differs between Norwegian and Romanian viewers: Norwegians see something natural and familiar, whereas Romanians sense the cold, the alienation, and the threat. Mihai is an aeronautical engineer by training but settles for a modest job maintaining the local school’s IT systems. Lisbet is a nurse by profession, caring for both the elderly and the deceased. They have five children—including a boy and a girl on the verge of adolescence—but what most clearly sets them apart from those around them is their religious faith and the conservative principles guiding their children’s upbringing. Initially, they are welcomed by the community and appreciated by their neighbors. However, when their eldest daughter arrives at school showing signs of possible abuse, the child protection authorities are notified. Pending the resolution of the case, the children are removed from their parents’ home and placed with other families dozens of kilometers away. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings will take months.

The production is stylish, the narrative flows smoothly, and the characters are superbly drawn. The actors deliver memorable performances, avoiding both idealization and caricature. Sebastian Stan completely inhabits the role of Mihai—an intelligent, family-devoted man who nonetheless cannot deviate from the letter of his faith. Renate Reinsve —a superb Norwegian actress I had previously noted in a few films—is on the verge of international stardom, and the role of Lisbet will further boost her profile. The entire cast is excellent; their sensitivity is conveyed precisely through a cool, restrained approach devoid of melodrama.

How the film is perceived will depend largely on the individual viewer. Given that approximately a quarter of Romania’s population currently lives abroad, the challenges faced by the Romanian diaspora have become a major theme in recent Romanian cinema. The struggles of adaptation, homesickness, communication barriers, and cultural differences are all reflected in these films, and ‘Fjord‘can be seen as part of this trend. Yet, at its core, this is also a matter of moral judgment, for the central figures are the five children. Were the actions taken by the Child Protection Services and the subsequent court rulings truly in their best interest? Did parents, the school, and the community protect them sufficiently? Neither then nor now can the exact details of the actual case be established with certainty. One of the merits of Cristian Mungiu’s film is that it avoids passing judgment, presenting the events as they unfolded and portraying the main characters with both their strengths and their flaws. Each viewer may form an opinion, but this stems largely from their own personal views. Lines of demarcation between cultures exist everywhere: between the immigrant family and their neighbors, between parents and children, among schoolchildren of diverse backgrounds, between religious beliefs and educational precepts, and even within the mixed Gheorghiu family itself. Can these divides be bridged so that coexistence prevails over conflict? Cristian Mungiu appears pessimistic—at least in the short term—regarding the prospects for human cohesion when faced with the rigidity of dogmas, whether religious or legal. Globalization and European integration may have erased visible borders, yet invisible ones can prove far more tangible and persistent. Opinions on what we see on screen will vary, too—which is precisely what I believe Cristian Mungiu intended.

between Dr. Strangelove and SNL (film: Digger – Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2026)

In ‘Digger‘, we have the first major contender for multiple Academy Awards at the 2027 ceremony. I make this prediction not only because the Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is a master of these accolades—with four already on his shelf—but also because, with ‘Digger‘, he tackles hot-button political and environmental issues dear to Hollywood, doing so with spectacular visual flair and production value. Furthermore, he cast Tom Cruise in the lead role, giving him the chance to take on a major part after growing bored (or so it seems?) with ‘Mission: Impossible‘ and similar action flicks. I would be very surprised if this film didn’t garner ten or even more nominations across various categories. It might not take home many awards, but that also depends on the competition.

‘Digger‘ is a satirical, cynical dystopia. Viewers will gradually discover that the plot operates on multiple levels, but the central thread is the story of a potential apocalypse—triggered by environmental apathy, political incompetence, the dismissal of scientific warnings, and the rapacity of major oil companies driven by profit at any cost. At the heart of the action is Digger Rockwell, the all-powerful head of the conglomerate entrusted with drilling operations in Greenland. A technical incident—stemming from one of the many catastrophe scenarios predicted by environmentalists yet ignored by almost everyone—sparks a global crisis, quickly plunging us into a scenario reminiscent of the classic Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Dr. Strangelove‘. However, the satirical approach is much coarser and the style far more direct—reminiscent of sketch shows like ‘Saturday Night Live‘.

The production is impressive. From the opening scene to the finale, the viewer is treated to a visual experience rich in references to both cultural heritage and immediate current events. Characterization, however, fails to avoid falling into stereotypes; the target of the satire is so obvious that it hardly needs to be reiterated scene after scene. In my view, this is the weak point of a film that is otherwise remarkable for many reasons. Tom Cruise—in his first non-action role in 14 years—delivers a standout performance that puts him on par with Peter Sellers. Digger essentially dominates the narrative, leaving little room to flesh out supporting characters who would have been interesting to explore further—such as the President (played by John Goodman), whom the script saddles with a pointless physical ailment in a somewhat failed attempt to add a layer of comedy, or Digger’s environmentalist sister, a role from which the excellent Sandra Hüller extracted little substance. The only other character who truly comes into focus is the terrorized scientist who finds himself in the thankless role of scientific advisor to the world’s power brokers played with a mix of fear and pathos by Riz Ahmed. ‘Digger‘ features many comic scenes reminiscent of the golden age of comedy films. Audiences will laugh heartily here and there, but that laughter will die away—both during the screening and after the film ends—because the movie depicts a scenario of self-destruction for the world we inhabit, one that is no longer merely a fantasy but a genuine possibility for the future.

A detail for those who follow the history of the film industry: ‘Digger‘ is the final film produced under the independent Warner Brothers banner before the studio’s acquisition by Paramount was finalized. It is a fitting conclusion to the history of the studio founded 103 years ago by the four Warner brothers.

vaudeville on screen (film: Amoureux de ma femme – Daniel Auteuil, 2018)

I couldn’t resist the temptation to watch a film that brings together such a formidable cast—Gérard Depardieu, Sandrine Kiberlain, and Adriana Ugarte, alongside Daniel Auteuil, who also directs. The screenplay is penned by the successful French playwright and screenwriter Florian Zeller; he adapted it from a stage play—also directed by and starring Auteuil in Paris (with a different cast)—retitling it ‘Amoureux de ma femme‘. For a change, I found the English release title—’The Other Woman‘—more inspired; the 2018 film constructs a vaudevillian comedy around the male obsession—specifically among married men—with beautiful and, ideally, much younger women. Auteuil was nearing 70 when he made the film, yet he played a man of about 50. Obsessions know no age, the film seems to tell us—at least in one’s imagination.

Daniel (the film’s protagonist shares his name) is a publisher living in Paris with his wife, Isabelle. He runs into his good friend Patrick by chance; Patrick insistently invites himself over for dinner to introduce his new girlfriend, Emma. The problem is that Isabelle dislikes Patrick, who had left her best friend for this younger woman. Emma, however, fascinates Daniel the moment she steps into the couple’s apartment. All the ingredients for a disastrous evening are in place.

Screenwriter Florian Zeller and director-actor Daniel Auteuil employ a technique reminiscent of Woody Allen’s films, blending the reality of the two couples’ meeting with the fantasies triggered in Daniel’s imagination by the presence of the beautiful young woman. Viewers will have fun trying to distinguish, in each scene, between actual events and the fantasies (or nightmares) of a man who has fallen for his friend’s beautiful young partner. The result is a blend of French boulevard comedy and the kind of narcissistic, misogynistic self-deprecation typical of Allen. Yet, to my mind, this is also where the film’s main problem lies: the imbalance between Daniel and the other characters is not compensated for by sufficient boldness in the dialogue or situations. The moralizing ending doesn’t help matters, either. Consequently, Daniel Auteuil’s role dominates the entire film (and the actor is, as always, superb), while his distinguished co-stars each leave the impression that they deserved more substantial roles. Paradoxically, I found the first part—the “apartment-based theater” segment—more cinematically successful than the second. ‘Amoureux de ma femme‘ offers pleasant entertainment and a chance to reconnect with actors whose films you wouldn’t want to miss. Like a lighthearted evening at the theater in Paris. Nothing more, but nothing less.

dignity and debauchery (film: The Forgiven – John Michael McDonagh, 2021)

‘The Forgiven‘—the 2021 film by writer-director John Michael McDonagh—holds all the makings of an intriguing movie capable of captivating fans of exotic thrillers, as well as viewers interested in cross-cultural encounters or the moral dimensions of taking responsibility. McDonagh’s screenplay is based on a novel by Lawrence Osborne set in Morocco. Unlike in several other well-known (or even famous) films, the Northwest African country—which is visually stunning filmed here—serves as more than just a backdrop in ‘The Forgiven‘. At the heart of the plot lies the interaction between a group of Westerners—whether Morocco-based residents or tourists engaging in various forms of travel, some more debauched than others—and the locals who serve them, whose lives are shaped and influenced by the foreigners’ presence. It is a timely and fascinating theme, provided it is explored in depth, with an understanding of the diverse personalities and nuances that distinguish the characters. This is precisely where I felt that the film only partially succeeded, despite its good intentions and high-quality performances.

The film’s protagonists, David and Jo Henninger, are a Western couple past their first youth (he more so than she) attempting to mend their relationship through a trip to Morocco—a journey heavily fueled by alcohol, with the ultimate destination being a friend’s luxurious villa where a decadent party is underway. While driving through the mountainous desert at night, David accidentally kills a teenager—a boy who might have been trying to rob them or simply wanted to sell a local souvenir: a rare fossil, a remnant of the seas that covered this part of the world millions of years ago. The police easily cover up the accident, but the teenager’s father appears, demanding not only his son’s body but also David’s participation in a journey to Berber territory for the burial. The man from the “civilized world” faces an extreme experience upon encountering the people whose lives he has upended—intentionally or not, it no longer matters. How will he survive, and what will he take away from this experience? Will he accept responsibility? Meanwhile, his wife, Jo, seeks solace in the debauched pleasures of a party at the villa. Will their relationship which was already falling apart survive?

The premise is intriguing, and there are many potential avenues for deeper exploration within the story. Unfortunately, in my opinion, none of them go far enough. ‘The Forgiven‘s depiction of the clash of cultures lacks nuance and relies on stereotypes to define both situations and characters. The marital crisis and moral dilemmas facing David and Jo also gave me a sense of déjà vu. The cast of characters inhabiting the desert villa is interesting, yet we barely get to know who each one is before they vanish, leaving behind little more than a faint outline. A few outstanding acting performances manage to partially redeem the film. Ralph Fiennes—an actor I have yet to see fail to bring a role to vivid life—succeeds once again in creating a memorable character. Jessica Chastain is solid; while her character lacks depth, the actress breathes life into her. I was particularly impressed by the performances of three Moroccan actors who drew upon their own experiences to enrich their characters’ emotions: Ismael Kanater as the father, Saïd Taghmaoui as the guide Anouar, and Mourad Zaoui as Hamid, the head of the villa’s staff. All three authentically and with restrained dramatic power conveyed the locals’ feelings regarding their encounters with foreigners. The dignity of these characters serves the story’s message far better than the efforts of the screenwriter-director, who—despite good intentions—could not avoid an “Orientalist” approach.
